The Haunted White House. Abraham Lincoln was drawn to spiritualist beliefs; it is said that Mary Todd Lincoln arranged for seances to be held in the White House. About ten days before Lincoln was killed, he reported a dream in which he saw himself in a coffin, when asked what happened, he said that he had dreamt that he had been assassinated. On the evening of the 14th April he was shot by John Wilkes Booth. For years after he was shot people reported hearing ghostly footsteps around the White House. The first person who reported actually seeing his ghost, was Grace Coolidge the wife of Calvin Coolidge the thirteenth president. She said that she saw the ghostly figure of Lincoln staring out of the Oval Office. During the terms of President Franklin D Roosevelt there were lots of such sightings. When Queen Wilhelmina of the Nederlands stayed at the White House she too reported that upon hearing a knock on the bedroom door, she opened it and encountered the apparition of Lincoln. The bedroom is known as the Lincoln room. Many others have reported seeing the ghost in or near the room. It is said that President Harry Truman also used to hear a mysterious knock on his bedroom about three in the morning.
