A Strange Working Environment
Many years ago, a team of demolition workers was contracted to work on the old Palace Hotel in Southport. Not long after work had commenced, the workmen started to report that they were hearing disembodied voices that was echoing around the deserted corridors. This could have been the source of a practical joke by their work-mates, however on several occasions, a four-ton lift in the building was seen to ascend and descend by itself; this was after the electricity had been disconnected.

Ghosts Galore
Pluckley village in Kent has its fair share of ghosts, a number of which is connected to the Dering family. For his loyal service during the Civil War Charles 11 granted Lord Dering the land that was to become the Dering estate, which included the village. The Black Horse inn, which was once owned by the family before it became an inn, is said to have a mischievous spirit that makes things disappear and then turn up again, sometimes after long periods of time.

Another ghost is that of a schoolteacher who committed suicide by hanging himself from one of the trees in a lane opposite the Black Horse. It is said that his ghost has been seen from time to time hanging from one of the trees.

Another area of ghostly activity is within the vicinity of the village crossroads, close to a little stone bridge. Nearby is a tree stump where a highwayman was cornered and fought with his back to the tree. He was run trough with an opponent's sword which killed him, the sword embedding in the bark. From time to time the scene is replayed usually on bright moonlight nights. Also a ghost of an old gypsy smoking a pipe is sometimes seen in this area.

There is the ghostly figure of woman from the 20th century who is sometimes seen in the church, a soldier that marches through the park and a phantom coach that sometimes rumbles through the village at midnight. It is alleged that the church of St Nicholas is to be haunted by Lady Dering who walks through the churchyard clutching a rose. It was a rose that was placed in her coffin by her husband before internment.

Other ghosts also haunt the church; there is the Red Lady who is said to be seen searching among the graves for a for a lost baby, mysterious knocking sounds coming from the Dering chapel and lights seen through the stained glass window of the same chapel.

The village has yet more ghostly activity; there is the sound of a woman calling her dog in Rose Court, as she did before death. The hair-raising screams that have been heard since one of the workmen a fell to his death at the local brickwork's, at full moon there is the ghost of a miller revisiting the old mill and a monk that on occasions is seen at Graystones.
