Sleep Paralysis Have you ever been in a deep sleep when suddenly your are woken abruptly feeling a sense of extreme terror? You feel there is an evil presence in the bedroom and you may even see a dark shadow in the room, possibly stooping over you. Your body is unable to move and you cry out in terror but however loud you try to shout out, your voice is unable to project, and you are literally choking on your words? You may have experienced the sensation that something is pinning you down or sitting on you chest. You may have heard muffled footsteps or voices. This terrifying experience is one you may not forget for a long time; you are convinced that you have experienced a ghostly visitation or an encounter with an evil force. If you have experienced all or any of the above, in all probability you did not experience a visit from a ghost or any other paranormal happening. It is more probable that you had suffered a condition called Sleep Paralysis. Whilst in a sleep state, your brain transmits no signals to the muscles. When you wake up abruptly, sometimes the brain, which has shut down signals to the muscles, is a little late in returning the control signals to the muscles which makes you feel paralysed and gives the above related symptoms that can be very realistic and frightening. You have the feeling of being in a dream like state but yet thinking you are awake. The visions you see and what you hear whilst in this state are what is called sensory hallucinations which are very difficult to distinguish from reality. Therefore in all probability you have not experienced a ghostly visitation but merely a symptom which is fairly common.
