Sissinghurst Castle Sissinghurst Castle is situated in the Weald of Kent, surrounded by beautiful countryside and is known for its wonderful gardens. A number of ghosts are said to haunt the castle, some of which appear to originate during the time of Queen Mary's reign when Sir John Baker resided in the castle. Sir John, an evil man, was renowned for the execution of hundreds of Protestants and he became to be known as 'Bloody Baker' It is alleged that in order to escape their execution, two women once hid under the main staircase of the castle. Just after hiding, Sir John and his manservant carried the body of a woman that had been murdered through the castle when her hand caught in the banister rails. Sir John freed it by cutting it off from the body. The hand fell into the lap of one of the hiding women. In 1930 Vita Sackville-West and her husband, Harold Nicholson, bought the castle for their home. It was Vita Sackville-West who was responsible for the restoration of the castle, she had pet a dog which always whimpered and raise its hackles whenever it passed the place where this passed event supposedly took place. There are other ghostly events linked with Sissinghurst, which includes a ghostly monk who often wanders about the gardens and the sound of footsteps and a clicking noise that seems to come from nowhere.
