A Doggy Tale

I had some very strange experiences as a child in our house growing-up and had one other isolated incident occur as well. The related thread between the occasions involved dogs! In both circumstances, the dog that was present refused to go past a certain spot or up a flight of stairs and growled at something that was not seen by me or others who was in the room. The more recent experience occurred about 6-7 years ago. I was living in a one bedroom on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

I had a dog at the time, Suzy. It was probably 10pm in the evening and I was waiting for my boyfriend to return home, just watching TV with an only a faint light on in the corner of the room. Suzy started to walk into the room and stopped short, staring into the corner and making a small growling noise. I thought to myself, this dog has gone mad, growling at the lamp in the corner!!!...I laughed; I thought it very funny. I then called her to me, thinking she only wanted attention. The dog started to walk towards me, but again stopped, seemingly unable to pass by the corner, still looking hard at it. No longer growling, she appeared to be torn between coming to me and not wanting to have to pass by the spot, which was the only way for her to go. I now noticed that the hair on her back and neck was up. I started to get a bit nervous.... having had a similar experience with my dog as a child. I commanded the dog to come, more firmly...still she wouldn't.

I grabbed her by the collar and walked her over to the couch and she ran by, still eyeing the corner. At this point, the hair on the back of my neck was up as well. I thought, this can't be happening! I grabbed my camera which was sitting out and took a couple of shots of the corner...I could see nothing, but noticed a chill or something else...just felt a presence (or imagined it in my growing fear...). I then forced back my fear and approached the corner to put on the lights, loudly exclaiming that I wasn't afraid, that God was watching out for me and turned them up full. The dog still did not want to walk past the corner. I was now very shaken and grabbed her leash and took her out for a walk. The dog practically knocked me down in her hurry to get out the door (and she was a small dog).

When we returned, she was fine, and I no longer felt any fear. When I got the pictures developed, I noticed there was an area of fog...sort of white, very faint, right in the corner. Whether it could be a reflection, I am not sure, but there were no reflective surfaces present and the light was very low. I showed the photo to some friends and they could see it as well. I think I threw the photo out as it gave me the creeps. The same thing happened a second time when my boyfriend was home, but did not last as long. It never happened again. This was a new building, no rats or other animals in the walls, no other animal owners on my floor...I am unable to think of any other explanation.
