Readers Stories

Air Time.

I used to work for a retail store in the North of England. We were mostly a mad crowd; (you had to be to work there). One day in the staff canteen, a woman I worked with declared that she was applying for a place on the local radio charity ghost hunt; which entailed taking a group of several people to a supposed haunted area and spending the night there.

We all scoffed and most put forward the argument that the supposed haunted places would be the local cemeteries and graveyards, though secretly most of us put our names in the hat for choosing. It was Halloween that the ghost hunt was to take place, and eventually the names were all picked. Alas mine was not among them, as I am quite interested in the paranormal I was obviously disappointed.

Three women and two men went off on the hunt and I was elected to stay by the radio and tape the show as they would be contacted by the station from time to time, checking to see how they were doing and if they'd seen any ghosts. I dutifully began taping at 11pm and sat by the radio listening to other groups' accounts of strange rustlings and thumps and bumps. Our group was assigned to a wood not far from where I live.

Eventually they were contacted, and one of the group, Andrea, started saying that they were cold and miserable and hadn't seen anything, but as I was listening I could hear a low grumbling coming across with her commentary on how many owls they had counted. Eventually the grumbling grew louder, until I could distinguish a low guttural voice coming across. It was saying, "Get out of here" over and over and getting louder each time.

Eventually the host of the show went on to another group, and I turned the tape off and rewound it. I'll admit, I was a little shaken by this time at what I'd heard. I am no coward and as I have stated earlier, quite interested in the paranormal. I played the tape back just to be sure that I hadn't imagined any of this, but sure enough the voice was still there.

Later the host announced that a woman listener in a very distressed state had contacted the station telling the host to get the people out of there. He laughed it off at that time, though later he came back sounding quite sombre, stating that they had been inundated with calls from the public expressing their fear for our team's safety. Next day at work I told the people of what I had heard and they laughed it off telling me that they had heard nothing apart from complaints about the cold. They stopped laughing when I produced the tape and replayed it to them. Alas over the years the tape has either been misplaced or recorded over.
