Beyond Death.

My mother and her sister were both raised by their Spiritualist aunts and uncle in a very large Victorian home in New York State. I remember this home from my childhood. While my mother would visit her "Mamma" and "Ma" (her aunts who raised her) and her uncle, I would sit in the front parlour and look through old magazines and take in the sights and familiar smells of the room. It was in this parlour that one of the more chilling ghost experiences took place.

One of my mother's aunts had taken ill and suffered for quite a long time. She was bed-ridden and spent the remainder of her days in an upstairs bedroom near the front of the house. Her sister would look in on her and bring her food and medicine at regular intervals. When she needed something at any other time, she would call out (since the door to her room and the door at the bottom of the stairs were always left open). Her then familiar call was "Come here, I need you!"

My mother told me that after her aunt had passed from this world, that she (my mother), her birth mother (my grandmother), all of my mother's siblings and the surviving aunt and uncle were all gathered in the front parlour to view the earthly remains of the deceased aunt. It was the custom in those days to have the coffin and bodies in the home of the deceased for the purpose of having the family pay their last respects. My mother said that they were standing around speaking in low whispers out of respect, when from the upstairs bedroom they heard the voice of the deceased (who lay quietly in her coffin in front of them) loudly call out "Come here, I need you!" My mother said, "We all heard it, all of us, and there was no mistaking it was her." This experience, as related to me by my mother when I was a boy, will remain with me until I pass from this world and beyond that...who knows?

Another experience from my mother's side of the family occurred three days after the death of my great-grandfather. It was evening and my great-grandmother returned to the house with wood for the stove. She entered through the back door and put the wood down next to the stove in the kitchen. When she turned around, she saw her husband sitting in his favorite chair as he used to do. He looked so normal and real that she spoke to him (not understanding his presence, since he had passed). "Why Pa, what are you doing here?" she said, and he promptly vanished "into thin air."

Yet another experience was the one that my Uncle had after attending the funeral of his sister (my aunt). She died suddenly and her body was flown back to New York from California where she had lived with her husband and two children. My Uncle told us that after he had excused himself from everyone after the funeral, he had gone home and straight to the sofa to lie down. His wife was in the kitchen brewing a cup of tea for him when he had a most unusual experience.

He told us that while on the sofa "I was wide awake, feeling very upset about her passing, but in full control of my senses when she appeared before my eyes! Then, as I lay there watching her at the foot of the sofa, my father (long since deceased) came "down" and stood next to her and said "It's alright B**** we're all going to be together."

Then they both vanished before my uncle's eyes. He immediately jumped up and told his wife and then told all of us (his family) about it in a very excited and optimistic way. I believe that he lost his fear of death after that experience and now believes, without a doubt, in a reunion of loved ones beyond what we call death.
