Readers Stories Ghostly Smoke I would like to share with you what I consider to have been a ghostly encounter back in 1997. I was visiting Ripley Castle in Harrogate, North Yorkshire with my husband. It was the summer of 1997 and I was around 7 months pregnant with our daughter, Annabel. We were doing the usual guided tour around the place. We were shown into a room (I think it was some sort of banqueting hall?), there was a large group of us. As the guide was talking, I looked to my left and noticed what appeared to be smoke billowing from the side of some young guy that was standing a few feet from me. I nudged my husband and whispered to him that I couldn't believe that someone had the nerve to smoke in a stately home. He just told me to hush as he was trying to listen. I looked again and there was still loads of "smoke". I could not believe that no one else noticed. Then the guide informed everyone that this particular room was haunted and pointed to the exact spot where the smoke had been and announced that this was where the ghost was seen. I looked and all the smoke had disappeared! I can only think that this was something paranormal - I am pretty psychic anyway. At the time I didn't say anything as I thought everyone would laugh and point fingers at the hysterical pregnant, hormonal woman. However, I am degree educated and I KNOW what I saw. Bizarrely, my daughter, born in November 1997, is also, seemingly, psychic and has seen ghost whilst a toddler... Frances from North Yorkshire.
