A Spooky Encounter

I have an open mind on ghosts and life after death. I have had a few unusual experiences; some of which I have found explanations for and some of those turned out quite funny. However, one recent experience has left me very curious indeed.

My partner, Patricia, is slightly psychic; there is according to her mother a history of it in the family. A year ago she was having a particularly bad time emotionally and health wise having gone through a bitter and acrimonious divorce and faced with the prospect of major surgery. She suffered bouts of depression and became convinced that she was not going to survive surgery. On sunny days she would sit in the park across the road just watching the world go by and dwelling on her misfortunes in life. One day she came back and mentioned that an old lady had started talking to her about her problems and saying how things needed to change if she was going to move on in life. What I found interesting was the comment Pat made that this woman was suddenly there and seemed to just disappear once out of sight when there was no time to have walked away. Her chats with the lady seemed to become more frequent, every time she went to the park and sat "thinking in her head" as she puts it, this woman would walk up and start to chat. Always it was the same, warning her to change and saying how she had been in the same position once. I didn't really take too much notice at the time.

One day we were sat in the kitchen having a coffee and Pat suddenly remarked "Oh it's that bloody woman again" with which she came to the kitchen door. I opened it and invited her in. She was an elderly white-haired woman with perfect white teeth and dressed in pale green and white. She spoke with a very soft Scottish accent and said how depressed she had been years previously and how it had ruined her life. She said she was just passing and wanted to see if things were all right and to see if her partner (me) was OK, she declined a cup of coffee but her presence made us both feel very relaxed and warm. After about twenty minutes she said she had to leave and opened the kitchen door and left. "How did she know where I lived?" asked Pat almost as soon as the door closed. I opened the kitchen door to call after the old lady but she was gone. There is a 60ft drive to reach the road outside and at least another 60ft to a place out of view. This would have taken some 20 seconds at a brisk 4mph walking pace yet I had opened the door within 10 seconds of her leaving and there was no trace of her.

When we talked about it there were other things that she had said which we couldn't understand how she knew these things. Pat had spoken of the divorce but not of her new partner, had never told her where she lived and one or two other private details. When she arrived Pat had her back to the window and drive so couldn't have seen her coming. Also, when she left the kitchen she would have turned right and walked past a large window behind where Pat was sitting. I was looking at Pat and I have no recollection of seeing the old lady walk past that window.

Who was she? Talking to neighbours no one matches that description in the area. A week later Pat had the operation, survived and is making a good recovery and we haven't seen the old lady since. This was a little spooky but there was only a feeling of warmth while she was there and a slight feeling of sadness after she had gone.
