Readers Stories Unexplained Incidents. I have had a few unexplained incidents, which could be put down to paranormal activity. Many centered on the house I was living in whilst a student at Sheffield University. The house dated back to the late 1800s. I shared with four other people most of which did not hold any beliefs in the paranormal but all admitted to having experiences that could not be explained. The atmosphere in the front room was so oppressive that we preferred to be in the kitchen. One weekend my friend and I were the only two in the house as the other 3 had gone home for the weekend. We were listening to music in the front room when we both heard the front door open. No one could come to the front door without us seeing as they had to walk past the front window. We went out to investigate but saw nothing. 5 minutes later we heard footsteps and what we thought was someone shouting. However I heard a male voice and my friend a female so that could be put down to overactive imaginations in light of events. On another occasion the same friend and I had been out and were chatting ALONE in the front room. The next morning the girl who had the room directly next to the front room, and the girl who had the room directly above the front room, both asked who we had brought back the night before as they had heard male voices coming from the room. Other incidents included hearing footsteps coming up the stairs when I knew I was alone in the house, and seeing figures out of the corner of my eye, which again is probably an overactive imagination, or a trick of the light. We suggested having the house blessed and the atmosphere then became so oppressive we left the room. The girls who had lived there before were renting a house on the same street and they all told similar stories, and agreed it was an unpleasant place. One night whilst on my own (again the other girls had gone home) I actually slept across the road at a friends house because the footsteps were so active. The other incidents occurred when I was working in an old cottage hospital. The hospital had once been a TB ward, then a psychiatric ward then a geriatric ward. It had been shut down a year previously but we had been put there as a temporary measure whilst our ward was being redecorated. One dinnertime the emergency buzzer went of so naturally another nurse and myself went down the long corridor to the toilet to find no body there. We put it down to an electrical fault. It couldn't have been a patient as they were all in the dining room and there were windows going all the way down the corridor to the bathroom, so we would have seen any one going down. This happened again several times that same afternoon and that night. An electrician was called, but he could find nothing wrong. After speaking to my mum who used to work on that ward before it closed, it turned out this happens a lot and it is thought to be the ghost of a gentleman who had hung himself 12 years previously. There are also incidents of black bin bags going missing and turning up in cupboards (I'm not discounting patient interventions on this one, psychiatric wards are known for their 'characters'.) And one member of staff reported that whilst on nights the TV had changed channel and every time she changed it back it would change to that same channel. Maybe there was a film on the ghost wanted to watch! In the same hospital grounds there is said to be a ghost of a man called 'Charlie' who enjoys setting off the alarms, and when on nights the alarms do go off at least twice a week. Lindsay.
