A Quick Finish.
My dad used to be a painter and decorator
before he had to retire because of a mild stroke. He told me that
once he was at an old ladies house in Etwall just outside Derby, the
house was old because the electric ran from a meter, which you had to
put money in. One night he was working in the living room and was up
a ladder painting the walls when all the lights went out, so to get
the electric going again he had to go into a pantry type room where
the meter was situated a few feet above his head.
Because the meter was higher than he
could reach, he had to use a stepladder of some kind. He climbed the
ladder and was just about to put some money in the meter when he felt
someone "grab" his shoulder, so he ran down the ladder and
out the house then cycled back to Derby, as fast as he could, leaving
the house wide open! I can't remember if he did go back to finish. My
mum said she remembers when he came home he was very pale!
